Last Saturday, FOURCORNERS COMICS turned one... I can hardly believe that it has been a full year since we opened up for a preview the night of the Gettysburg Halloween parade. Since then, it seems like so much has changed.
That first night, the store was probably only 1/4 full. We basically had Art's lifelong collection and a dream. We didn't really know how to run a comic shop. We weren't even sure if anyone would show up. There were a lot of doubts.... but, what we did have was a passion for comics and an aim to share them with the community.
And people did come. Slowly at first, but we started to meet people like us who loved art and loved a good story. We've met really great people along the way - from across the country and just down the block. Friendly faces that weren't afraid to bring their friends in, market for us, help us out for big events or come in every single week.
One thing that stands out to me is how different the store looks just one year later. Almost weekly someone says to us, "Did you change something again?" Almost every inch of the store is full now and we are constantly trying to figure out how to better display things, where to put items to show them off best. And to me, that's one of the most fun things...
The other is evolving our collection and recommending things. Gettysburg hasn't had a comic book shop in a while and a lot of people just weren't reading comics. Many of our customers ask us, "Where do I start?" But there isn't really one answer to that and finding that answer for each person is fun. Probably the most gratifying is when a child absolutely hates reading and we are able to find a comic or graphic novel they like - it opens up a whole world to them.
We've been through weekends only, Free Comic Book Day, artist signings, Magic the Gathering sanctioning, Reenactment Weekend, new DC and Marvel launches, retailer training and several fundraisers and the year has zoomed by unbelievably fast.
We are looking forward to many more birthdays. And the truth is we still aren't sure how to run a comic shop, but the journey so far has been a blast!
